Czech car brand Skoda, which has a history of more than 100 years, said it is using 3D printing technology to streamline the car manufacturing process. They are committed to adopting new technologies to make the design and production of automobiles easier and faster.
Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA Board Member for Production and Logistics, said: “The latest push for ŠKODA comes precisely from 3D printing, with which we can manufacture parts and tools much faster. New designs can be produced in just a few days. Prototypes, and there is no need to spend a lot of money to make molds, which not only saves time, but also saves research and development costs. In addition, we often 3D print production tools and parts needed on the production line to assist production or repair.”
According to Formlabs, fully 3D printed cars are still a long way off, but 3D printing is changing the automotive industry in other ways. Skoda isn’t the only manufacturer using China 3D printing technology to change the way they produce cars. Bentley Motors used the technology to create detailed parts for their EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car. Volkswagen has combined 3D printing with traditional manufacturing to recreate the iconic 1962 Microbus. 3D parts gave the van some improvements, and the gasoline engine was replaced with an electric one.
3D printing reduces the need to keep inventory on hand. Manufacturers can print parts as needed rather than keeping large quantities of parts on hand.
